Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn
Summer 2020 will be etched in our memories for so many reasons; it has been such a mixed bag. While we endured lockdown and craved social contact, we also discovered the sanctuaries that are our homes, so important to recharge and rejuvenate. It has been a summer of shielding, social isolation and schoolwork on Seesaw but it has also been a summer of sunshine, home improvements, eating together as a family and discovering the art of tablescaping!
We spent the summer in our gardens in floaty kaftans, block-print PJs and pretended that our pretty floral dressing gowns were wrap-dresses, Zoom ready with fresh, dewy make-up. So, whilst we are still enjoying a last bit of Indian Summer in September, the mercury is set to dip in the days to come and its time to get our homes cosy and inject some rich, deep and alluring hues for Autumn without lifting a paintbrush!
This season we say goodbye to cool colours and welcome in olive greens, mustards, burnt orange, fiery and deep reds as well as petrol blues. Our favourite and simplest way to refresh rooms and interior décor is to add cushions and throws. Soft, sumptuous throws are an essential companion with Netflix/Prime/Apple TV or good old BBC iPlayer!
We recommend a variety of suitable throws e.g. homes with dogs and young children should steer clear of cashmere and fine wool weaves and instead take on kantha throws and bedspreads in autumnal tones. For those new to this name, kanthas are 2 layers of fabric hand-stitched together in a running stitch. You normally have 2 different prints on each side so a fabulous 2-in-1 investment! Go for solid colours or mix floral prints and patterns for a contemporary take on chintz. Kantha quilts are durable, machine washable and can make the scruffiest sofa look wonderfully stylish!
Our wool throws, come in plain contrasting colours on each side, in ikat weaves and the sophisticated Jamewars with paisley patterns woven on each side. Made in washed Merino wool, these are a fantastic way to add warmth and style to your bed, armchair and even look fabulous adorning shoulders, perfect for when watching the little darlings at matches in cold, windy climes. Our most popular ones are the brightest and bold in ikat weaves like the Scarlet and Amber, perfect Autumn colours, while the Charcoal and Indigo Blue stay on as classics. The Amber Rani wool throw is a brilliant Summer to Autumn buy with a Fuchsia pink side and a burnt orange/sienna tone on the other.
Nothing feels as luxe as cashmere and to have an entire throw or bedspread is an investment. But few will complain about the snug and warmth factor of this fabulous fabric. Go for neutral or classic tones to get the buy-in from ‘him indoors’ or better still, gift it for Christmas and snuggle in together! Rich chocolate tones and classic navy will never disappoint.
Next on our list are Tablecloths, an easy and inexpensive way of adding or changing colour and softening the kitchen or dining room. This autumn we will be laying harvest tablescapes on our Vert de Mer tablecloth, inspired by Edward Bulmer Natural Paint’s colour of the same name. Hand block printed for us in Jaipur, it looks great with mustards, oranges and reds.
Cushions are an easy way to update a room and clearly, we believe you can’t have too many! Mix square and long cushions in bold colours, luxurious textures, blockprint, ikat and embroidery. Details such as trims and fringes give an added attractive feature to our snuggle-buddies. Whether it is jewel coloured silk ikat cushions or tactile embroidered ones, we guarantee they will be a perfect finishing touch. Add a karate-chop and fluff them up to increase the cuddle factor!
